Feng Shui - Home Improvements, Upgrades & Renovations

When you plan to renovate or are planning to renovate your home or office areas it is most important to consider that the extensions that you make or are planning to make are in character with your current existing setup. Why change a good thing - why change a horse in the middle of the race. Consistency is everything so to speak. Not only will your home or abode maintain its attractive appearance - it also ensures good Feng Shui.

However, your extensions do not have to have the very same shape and shapes as the existing building to ensure continued good Feng Shui. If it's up to your fancy to do something quite different make sure that the design is compatible with your existing home, yet with a distinct separation in character. For instance or example, a pointed roof shape (fire) will go quite handily with a flat roof (earth) because fire burns to ash or earth: a flat roof (earth) will go with a curved roof (metal) because earth gives minerals or metal, and so on.

On the other hand, if you were to put a nicely and finely polished roof shape ( fire) against a curved roof shape (metal), then a most destructive order might well be created since fire melts metal and a curved roof ( metal) against a tall rectangular roof (wood) would be most bad Feng Shui practice because metal can chop wood.

As a general guide you can use the "Five Elements" diagram that is a basis of good Feng Shui practice - both as a basis and manual for planning and following through with Feng Shui planning practices as well as the follow through process. This way you can more than ensure that changes in your home follow a most productive as well as enhanced planned sequence. As well consider that when you involve extensions that you may add to your property, to take into account the shape of your site and its surroundings.

One other very valuable current practice, that is most trendy and important at this time, is to be "green". Use as many recycled materials as possible. It's not only a case of "waste not, want not", but good solid environmental and Feng Shui practice as well. Without the care of "mother earth" we are all left alone in this world and in this universe.

Many people these days use recycled materials - whether for reasons of fashion, to help save to environment and if nothing else because it's economical - a good way to be thrifty and save money on our household improvement and construction renovation projects. Renovations, as we all know, bring about an enhancement to our lives and our abodes - almost a rebirth.

Take care to be aware of the types of recycled materials that you purchase, trade or retrieve as they will end up becoming an integral part and component of your home or office buildings. Old materials may have "left over" qi. Left over qi can carry over and affect the most vital Feng Shui of your home.

If there is one general rule when it comes to using recycled material in your home renovations and construction upgrades it is not to use more than one third secondhand materials when you are building or are involved in renovations.

It can best be said that for structural work - like columns and beams - then it is best to use new material and materials. In hidden places, for example roofs, wall framing and rendered brides then it can be best to use a mixture of old and new. Lastly for plumbing and electrical work always use brand new materials. It's better to be safe than sorry. It never hurts to err on the side of safety and durability when it comes to home renovations and upgrades.

Feng Shui Home

Feng shui home principles apply for both houses and apartments, though many people fear that lofts, condos and suits are more exposed to bad chi. The one thing that differentiates houses and apartments in terms of feng shui home design is the presence and respectively the absence of the surrounding land. For houses this is one other environment to remedy and restore in terms of chi balance. In the case of the apartment, all the background control will be focused on the inside, with all the challenges that sharing walls brings. The exclusively interior feng shui home rules have to counteract the bad influence the noises, smells and vibes from neighbors have on the inhabitants of an apartment.

The feng shui home analysis further involves the investigation of the front and back structures as they are differentiated for houses. On the other hand apartments tend to follow the light source, looking towards windows, but the problem under such circumstances would be the entrance that is usually dark because it's located more towards the center of the building. Compensations do exist in the feng shui design of an apartment. You can attract more positive energy when you can make the choice of floor you want to live at, not to mention that the selection of the flat with the best view is one other top point to benefit from in terms of feng shui home arrangement.

Many of the feng shui home tips are misinterpreted leading to incorrect applications. For instance, many people avoid putting their aquarium in the kitchen since they consider water will extinguish the fire element specific to this house area. Such a principle has to be understood symbolically, particularly since the presence of the water tank in the kitchen could increase the prosperity of the home. Another false feng shui home tip is that of never keeping books in the bedroom since they will stimulate you and prevent good sleep. False!

Unfortunately, many other examples of false myths like the ones presented above are present in feng shui home guides that are bought and used by people all over the world. The next question here would be how to recognize what is good and what is wrong. The first word of advice is to use your intuition and not go for the rules that say "never" or "always". Real feng shui home applications will always take the individuality factor into consideration since every person is a unique entity and the generalities have to be particularized.

Selling Your House Fast With Feng Shui

Many real estate agents and home investors like to contact me to find out if there is a feng shui ritual they could use to sell a house quickly and for the price they want. A recent reader of my blog wrote to me asking:

I am a Realtor and have a home listed right now that I feel should have sold quickly. It's beautiful and the price is right as well. Any idea on what I could do to bring good luck to this home, so that it will sell quickly? Our housing market is a bit slow right now, but this home is the best priced one in the area compared with other homes that offer the same features. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Being a property enthusiast myself, I've noticed that a house that has great features alone won't sell it. I've been to houses that have all the great features but comments from open-home guests are that it just doesn't feel right. It's got to have good chi flow and this cannot be changed overnight. For example, if the house has a front door that directly faces the back door; this is a serious layout problem that would need walls built to remedy correctly (windchimes in between are OK short-term fixes).

However, there is a ritual (I can't remember the source though I'm afraid - I think it's in one my aunt's books) which uses the 5 elements method to bring on a quick sale. I can't promise that it would bring you the price you want, but I have had clients and friends who have managed to move very difficult property or bring motivated buyers using this method.

Inside a red packet (angpow packet), place the following items:
1. a small piece of wood from the kitchen of the house for sale
2. a small piece of metal from the kitchen of the house for sale
3. some earth from the garden of the house for sale

Then, find a fast-moving stream or river, and throw the red packet into the fast moving water. Visualise a quick sale of the house while throwing this into the water.

I also recommend doing some space clearing rituals to clear out stale chi before an open home.
Some other methods that I've heard of are:

- Hang a photo of the house for sale, and stick a "SOLD" sticker on it. Paste it somewhere you can see everyday (kitchen fridge) until it is sold.

- At the entrance of the house, hang a picture of a bird carrying a price tag (be hopeful, but realistic!) on it's beak - flying in towards the house. It should not fly out.

Try these and if it works for you please write in to my posting at to comment!

Wall Mounted Fountains in a Feng Shui Home

Wall mounted fountains make such a difference to the atmosphere in your home. Indoor wall fountains have become a very welcome feature tool for creating an indoor oasis, exclusive to your own personal taste and lifestyle. They lend a peaceful and comforting Feng Shui atmosphere to your surroundings and are so much fun to own.

Improved Feng Shui is just one of the many reasons why indoor wall mounted fountains are chosen to enhance the ambience of some of the finest homes, business, restaurants, hotels and corporations from around the world. These wall mounted fountains are also very easy to take care of.

When we moved into our new house, we wanted to have a calming ambience throughout our house. After researching online, we found that a wall mounted waterfall was the answer. Indoor wall mounted fountains provide a stunning accent for any room and are available in a wide variety of wallet friendly prices.

Indoor wall mounted fountains are becoming very popular as an indoor accessory and for many adding one to their interior is of major importance. It certainly was for us. Fountains can also add to the humidity which is good in certain environments. Indoor wall mounted fountains are a way for you to bring the relaxing effects of running water into the home or office.

We found that wall mounted fountains are also available in a wonderful selection of artwork forms, whether you prefer a traditional or contemporary unit, you are sure to find just the right fountain for any room you are modifying.

Indoor wall mounted fountains are flat, and have water flowing over the fountain face, and are framed on the top and bottom. Our wall mounted fountain was easy to set up, and even easier to enjoy.

After researching online at the many different designs styles from traditional lion head wall mounted fountains or cherub water fountains to contemporary and modern wall mount fountains such as the Vestaglia indoor wall fountain by Hunter Kenroy and the Waikiki Beach wall fountain by Water Wonders we settled on a medium Waikiki that we found at Serenity Health.

Indoor fountains are available in many styles, made with long-lasting materials like stainless steel and heat-treated metals and come in a variety of designs and sizes.

Your wall mounted fountain can transform your home by providing a wonderful backdrop for other relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga. You will find that your indoor wall fountain has the ability to calm anyone within the area you display your personal oasis of relaxation. They add to the value of any setting while at work or entertaining guests in your home and are a great conversation piece.

Another benefit that we found with indoor wall mounted fountains is they also act as natural air purifiers. The water tumbles back into the indoor fountains reservoir releasing negative ions into the room.

These negative ions bond to unwanted dust particles and allergens, purifying the environment and promoting physical and mental health. It is this energy transfer that concerns the Feng Shui discipline, which teaches us the importance of maintaining a proper balance of elements for a healthy, prosperous environment.

The air inside your home is often more polluted than the air outside, and you can help to make your environment healthier with a wall mounted fountain.

Feng Shui Tips For Your Bedroom

Bedroom is considered as one of the most important feng shui spots in the house. As we spend almost one-third of our time in the bedroom, we just have to make sure it is decorated with good feng shui design or we would end up suffering from many a bad feng shui symptom.

One of the symptoms of wrong location of the bed can be observed in those who are always accident prone. When one is subject to disturbing energy due to bad location of the bed on which one is staying static for at least 8 hours per night or more, one can be very nervous and ill-tempered during the day, to say the least. Not to mention a host of other problems that are related to this bad feng shui symptom. And this can be just the beginning of many problems, which include all kinds of dis-eases at the mental, emotional as well as physical level.

To locate the bed in the best feng shui manner, there are several main points to observe:

1. The bed has to be positioned in such a way that it has to have a solid backup to it. This is to say that it'd be vital to sleep with our heads close to the wall against which the head of our bed is leaned. The further away our head is from the solid wall, the less auspicious energy we're exposed to during our sleep.

2. It's not a good idea to have a ceiling fan right above the bed as, according to the 'Kua' in I-ching, it gives out intrinsic energy imprints for our 'middle section' to be empty, which is absolutely something a pregnant lady should refrain from no matter what. Even for those who are not concerned with pregnancy, such intrinsic energy imprint would throw the solar plexus' energy off balanced, which would create the 'un-groundedness' that is so evident in those who're always considered as having 'bad luck'. Hence the reason for 'bad luck' - when one's not 'grounded', one has nothing to show for, let alone 'luck'.

3. There is no place for mirrors in the bedroom, straight and simple. Besides being used for drawing in energy from its opposite direction, mirrors can bounce energies back and forth, thus creating much dynamic movement of 'chi' - the 'Yang energy'. When too much 'Yang energy' is present in the bedroom, the 'Yin state' is not facilitated. Therefore, it's a wrong idea to have mirrors in the bedroom where the 'Yin state' is to be preferred.

4. The height of the bed is also of much importance in terms of feng shui. One would not want to feel being suspended in mid air when sleeping. The issue of 'un-groundedness' comes into play again here as feng shui has a great deal to do with earth energy. When one is in the open and static 'Yin state', one's energy system is wide open and thus easily affected by many external factors such as those mentioned above. Sleeping with such feeling as being suspended in mid air renders one vulnerable to unstable energetic upheavals; therefore, it's not good feng shui design at all.

On top of all the above-mentioned is the importance of precise configuration of bed location according to the 'flying-stars' table, without which all feng shui work is not complete. What the 'flying-stars' table is to feng shui is very much like the multiplication table to mathematics. No advanced work can be done without it...more on that later.

Home Feng Shui

Feng Shui is the study of invisibly force known as chi that is generated from wind, water and objects. Chi is the energy that causes motion and vitality in life.

Good chi is healthy, strong and balanced. Poor Chi is weak, ailing and imbalanced. By moving objects or changing its placement at our homes, we can enhance Chi. Thus we can balance and improve our life circumstances and reduce tension and stress.

Shar chi is negative energy. Sharp angles contain shar chi and they are like ‘poison arrows’ that generate negative energy to the area they point to. People who are having activities at these inauspicious areas are likely to be quick-tempered and quarrel frequently. A shar’s energy can be blocked by filling in the angle.

A house should be as airy as possible, uncluttered and attractive with plenty of light to attract beneficial chi. However, you should never sleep under a beam or with any other objects such as a windchime or ceiling light place directly over your head. This will cause the person to have restless sleeps. Stairways are like beams, thus it is inauspicious for door to face a stairway directly. This can affect family harmony and finances.

Mirrors are common in bedrooms. However, many feng shui practitioners see them as inauspicious and it should not be placed in couple’s rooms. They believe that mirrors reflect aggressive energy and strain the relationship of the couple who sleep there and causes bad luck to the single person. By using a smaller mirror will reduce the negative energy.

Well, that's all for now. Thank you for reading.

Buying A Home With Feng Shui - Location, Location, Location

If you are familiar with the concepts of feng shui, then you know that purchasing a house that is located at a T-junction (where one road passes in front of your house, and another road dead ends into it directly in front of your house), or at the end of a cul-de-sac, can present particular problems from a feng shui standpoint.

If your home is at a T-junction, then you will likely have a rush of chaotic energy directed at your home. This can create a very difficult living space, because it interferes with the positive energy that you are trying to create within your home. Every time you open the door to your house, you will be letting in a rush of chaotic, negative energy.

Conversely, if your home is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, you will find that the energy in that area is very stagnant, because there is really nowhere for it to go. So it can be very hard to invite new people and new opportunities into your home, since the energy directly in front of your home is stagnant and motionless.

There are a few ways that you can deal with this using the principles of feng shui. If you have a rush of energy bombarding your home because your home is located at a T-junction, you can place a bagua mirror above your front door to deflect the chaotic energy. You can also plant trees or bushes at the end of your driveway to help shield your home against this energy. If you enjoy statuary, you can also play statues in front of your home that are protective - Buddha, Kwan Yin, dragon, and lion statues all work well for this.

If the energy around your home is stagnant because it is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, you can help to change this by installing water features near the front door of your home. When you do this, make sure that they are features that contain moving water, such as fountains or waterfalls. If it is not practical to use water features in front of your home, you can also use landscaping elements that represent flowing water, such as flags, wind chimes, or other freely moving objects.

Having a home located at a T-junction or cul-de-sac can seem like a significant challenge to many people, especially if they do not know why the energy around our home is not harmonious. However, by using the steps that we have discussed in this article, you can easily create a harmonious space within your home, regardless of where your home is located.
